Viveca Smith Publishing was founded in 2003 with the purpose of publishing international children's literature in English translation. Our first book, Kornei Chukovsky's Doctor Ouch, fulfilled that goal as the first entry in our Children's International Series. We soon expanded the concept of the company to include literature with an international focus, publishing Willard Manus's A Dog Called Leka, a wonderful young adult adventure novel, set in the islands of the Aegean Sea. We are pleased to say that the book won several awards, including the Eric Hoffer Notable Award for a Young Adult novel in 2006. In April, we will publish the second volume in the Children's International Series. Tajik author Aminjon Shookuhi's story, Where Does the Water Come From?, is both a story of adventure and a study of the environment. Two young friends follow the irrigation canals back to their source in an effort to find out how the irrigation ditches fill with water every day. The story fulfills our goal of bringing another part of the world to children by means of translation into English.
We have long been planning an anthology of international love poetry. With the publication of this book of poems, we hope to expand the company to include literature for adults, as well as children. However, this much-delayed volume is on hold until we have enough submissions to publish an entire book. The submissions we have are wonderful, but at this point there are not enough of them to make publication possible. Send in more poems, please! We have considered, taking into account the times we live in, making the volume a collection of poems of both love and war. If you have any international war poems, please submit those! They could balance the love poetry and make the book long enough to print!
